It’s no secret that the ‘Princeless’ series is one of the best all-ages adventure comics on the market. It should come to no surprise that the critically acclaimed title is still bringing exciting stories that are truly for “all ages.” Such is the case with ‘Princeless Book 4: Be Yourself” #2. It’s an action-packed fun escapade as Adrienne and Bedelia become the “guests” of some overly attentive goblins. Meanwhile, Devin is on a quest of his own.
One of the joys of ‘Princeless’ is Jerome Whitley’s dialogue and storytelling. Adrienne and Bedelia have a great camaraderie that I associate with some of the best buddy films. Their bravery in the face of danger is very empowering. There’s no hesitation when the time comes to fight. If you read ‘Rat Queens,’ and you should if you’re old enough, then you know these would fit right in the badass department. So they are instantly engaging, funny and heroic. No wonder the goblins chose them to be their champions.
Devin is determined to save mom by going on this quest using his smarts and not his brawn. He has to take Kira since she’s the capable warrior he’s not. Their fathers have something else in mind pairing them together for this adventure. You can’t help but root for the nerd and the warrior.
Emily Martin and Brett Grunig bring it all to life with a playful cartoonish style and bold earth tones. The layouts are simple but full of fun expressions and action. Martin’s versatility is on full display as she transitions from oddly adorable goblins to a full blown monster that is straight out of an adult nightmare.
‘Princeless Book 4: Be Yourself’ #2 has everything you could want in an adventure comic. Brave and endearing heroes, goblins, dwarves, dragons and monsters. All with a sense of humor that doesn’t insult the reader and transcends age groups. Buy for your kids, your neighbor’s kids or just buy for yourself.
