BIG RUMOR: Marvel Eyeing Matthew McConaughey As ‘Spider-Man’ Villain Norman Osborn?

May 20, 2015

A new rumor coming Point of Geeks from claims that Oscar winning actor Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers ClubWolf of Wall Street, True Detective, Insterstellar) is being eyed by Marvel Studios for the role of Norman Osborn aka The Green Goblin in their Spider-Man reboot. As with all rumors from sources we’re not really familiar with, consider with a giant grain of salt.

We know that Marvel Studios had indeed pursued Matthew for a role in Doctor Strange, and McConaughey has confirmed recently to Variety that both Warner Bros. and Marvel had been looking at him for future comic book roles, but never named the parts or the projects. Adding Matthew to the reboot might help hush critics who don’t even want the movie to exist in the first place, while many other fans are excited to see what Marvel Studios could do with the material.

“I’ve read some Marvel and DC scripts and I’ve talked about working with them on some scripts, none of which I’ll share with with you what they are — or were. Yeah, I’ve circled some of those. Nothing has been right for me yet. But I’m sure open to it…It’s very simple for me. I look at the script. Is the opportunity exciting? Is the money that comes with it exciting? Sure. Is it the possibility of going, “Hey you can get on a train and it can be a franchise and you could do 3, 4, 5, and have a great time as some kind of superhero or anti-hero.” But I would also look at something like that and say, “Hey, in success that means you are on the train for a while.” Contractually, you’re going to return to the character over and over. It’s something I asked myself is it something I’d want to return to. Would I be excited to go back and put the shoes on the character again? Going and doing the press tour with that group of people again? I always ask myself those questions again. It starts with the story and character.”

Norman Osborn has a varied history within the Marvel universe starting off as mentor and villain for Peter Parker’s Spider-Man. He would eventually become a villainous rival of Tony Stark dawning the Iron Patriot armor, which Rhodey wore in Iron Man 2. Obsorn would eventually form his own version of the Avengers with The Dark Avengers, a group villains posing as heroes, it’s possible that if Norman joins the MCU he’s the type of Spider-Man villain that could crossover into the main films. This begs the question, if Marvel is looking to hire an actor for Osborn will be apart of Captain America: Civil War along with Parker?

Matthew’s Dallas Buyers Club co-star Jared Leto, who also earned an Oscar took on the Joker role for Suicide Squad. It’s possible Matthew has been waiting for an iconic villain role to make his own similar to what Leto is doing. While Loki is easily considered the MCU version of the Joker, Green Goblin is also Spider-Man’s Joker villain archetype.

Playing the devil’s advocate here, it seems weird that Marvel would be talking with actors while they still haven’t decided on a director for Spider-Man. That’s unless Osborn has a cameo or has scenes in Civil War, which would mean that The Russo Brothers would be involved with casting. This explains why Marvel is casting Peter Parker before they even have a director lined-up.

Asa Butterfield is said to be in talks and a current frontrunner along with Tom Holland for the Peter Parker role.

Marvel’s Spider-Man reboot will be heading into theatres in July 2017.
