After revealing that Marvel Studios is looking for either a Black British or African actor, 30-45, to portray a “tough, dangerous and mysterious” villain, That Hashtag Show has now found an actor in the mix for the role: André Holland.
Pre-production is currently underway in London, and earlier this week Holland read for the role of the villain.
Holland was recently in the film ‘High Flying Bird,’ from Steven Soderbergh and Netflix. That was the second collaboration with Soderbergh, the first being the Cinemax series ‘The Knick.’ He was also in ‘Moonlight,’ the Academy Award winner for Best Picture. Also in 2016, he was a series regular on the sixth season of FX’s ‘American Horror Story.’ Last year, he was in the Hulu series ‘Castle Rock,’ and Ava DuVernay’s ‘A Wrinkle in Time.’ That film marked the second time he’s worked with DuVernay, after the two did ‘Selma’ together. Needless to say, he has a great resume.
Further, That Hashtag Show gave a few more actors the studio has interest in for two other roles:
- Older female role:
- Rachel Weisz (‘Oz the Great and Powerful,’ ‘The Favourite’)
- Older male role:
- Sebastian Koch (‘Bridge of Spies,’ ‘Homeland’)
- Alec Baldwin (‘BlacKkKlansman,’ ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’)
The casting process for these two roles will start after the villain role is cast.
There is also some frontrunners for the second female lead, with Emma Watson (‘Harry’ franchise, ‘Beauty and the Beast’ remake) headlining the list, as well as Alice Englert (‘Beautiful Creatures,’ ‘Top of the Lake’) and Dar Zuzovsky (‘Hostages,’ ‘Neighborhood’) and Florence Pugh (The Little Drummer Girl,’ ‘Fighting with My Family’).
Meanwhile, Cate Shortland (‘Lore,’ ‘Berlin Syndrome’) will direct. The first draft of the screenplay is from Jac Schaeffer (‘Captain Marvel,’ ‘Vision and Scarlet Witch’). Schaeffer wrote the upcoming ‘The Hustle,’ a remake of ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,’ starring Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson. Ned Benson (‘The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby’ trilogy) recently did rewrites on the script.
Moreover, ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ cinematographer Rob Hardy is part of the crew. Seven-time ‘Harry Potter’ costume designer Jany Temime and ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ art director Jim Barr are also onboard.
Filming will begin sometime in June in the United Kingdom. Other shooting locations could include Croatia and Miami, Florida.
Marvel Studios has yet to officially announce the release date. However, there is an assumption it will take the May 1st, 2020 spot previously slated by Disney.
