Bryan Singer has confirmed via Instagram that newcomer Lana Condor has landed the role of fan-favorite mutant mallrat Jubilee in X-Men Apocalypse. The character has been teased with cameos in the original films but was never given actual scenes.
This might be another step for Fox and the X-Men team to really give fans characters we’ve been dying to see. There is already speculation that Channing Tatum’s Gambit will also be in the film, as the character’s first introduction in the franchise before his own solo outing in 2016.
The character of Jubilee known for her bright yellow jacket, bubblegum, sunglasses, pixie haircut, and neon clothes was a huge hit in the 90’s, thanks to being the youngest member on the team during the cartoon series. Making her the perfect character for the young audience to identify with, as the troubled teen was thrown into this fantastical world surrounded by super-powered adults.
Quite a different story to what the films turned-out to be, focusing more on the youth population than the single story of one teenaged mutant. At the time of the original film’s release fans suspected we might never see Jubilee since he runaway status was stolen and given to Rogue because of character’s backstory had been pulled due to rights issues with Ms. Marvel.
There had been production art created for the character so she could appear in Days of Future Past but she was never used in the final version, likely due to the inclusion of Blink. It’s expected her scenes could be in the future, but with her flamboyant style might be a perfect fit for the 1983 setting as we’ve already pointed-out. I’m actually hoping she sticks around for the new trilogy or ends-up apart of the New Mutants lineup.
