Canadian Actors Who Made It Big

Jan 29, 2024

Among the bright lights in Hollywood, many Canadian actors have shown off their immense talent, taking themselves from the cozy Great White North right into the glitz and glamor of showbiz. These actors have conquered the hearts of movie-watchers and TV show bingers, making a name as fixtures in the entertainment industry.

So, let’s draw back the curtain and discover a few Canadian actors whose origins might catch you by surprise.

Seth Rogan

Famed for his roles in Pineapple Express (2008), Superbad (2007), and The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005), resident funny guy Seth Rogan was born in coastal Vancouver, British Columbia. After taking up gigs as a stand-up comedian in his hometown, he eventually moved to Los Angeles to play Ken Miller in Freaks and Geeks (1999 – 2000). Since then, he has ventured into voice acting, directing, writing, and producing, all while taking up roles in a variety of film genres – but always keeping comedy and humor at the heart of his filmography.

Ryan Reynolds

Ryan Reynolds is another Vancouver native with an extensive and diverse filmography. After playing small roles in several television series between the ages of 13 and 19, he almost gave up before a fellow actor convinced him to move to Los Angeles.

Reynolds’ work ranges from roles in romantic comedies like The Proposal (2009) and Definitely, Maybe (2008) to action-packed superhero movies like Green Lantern (2011), X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), and, of course, the Deadpool series. He was also the first Canadian to be named People’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2010 and is a notable businessman with ownership of football club Wrexham AFC, Mint Mobile, and other organizations and companies.

Michael Cera

Hailing from the small city of Brampton, Michael Cera is best known for playing quirky, offbeat characters in coming-of-age comedy movies like Evan in Superbad (2007), Scott Pilgrim in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010), and Nick O’Leary in Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist (2008).

While his first acting stint was an unpaid role in a Tim Hortons commercial, his silver screen debut ended up being in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2005), directed by George Clooney. Other than his seasoned career in acting, he’s also a published writer, a Broadway performer, and a musician, and he is looking to direct his first movie soon.

Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey is a world-renowned comedic actor from the town of Newmarket, Ontario. His dynamic slapstick performances gained him serious recognition in the industry, but his origins are in stand-up comedy. From the age of 15, Carrey performed at many comedy clubs in Toronto and eventually made a name for himself locally as an impressionist stand-up comic.

His long-term efforts in the Canadian stand-up scene sparked a move to Hollywood, where he began to get noticed by producers and talk shows. Carrey went on to star in now-classic films like The Mask (1994), Ace Ventura (1994), The Truman Show (1998), Bruce Almighty (2003), and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004). He has also been the host of Saturday Night Live three times.

Rachel McAdams

Rachel McAdams came from humble beginnings in London, Ontario, to a nurse mother and a truck driver father. After attending Disney and Shakespeare summer camps as a child and participating in theater productions growing up, she eventually graduated from a four-year theater program at York University and made her television debut on MTV.

In 2002, she landed her first Hollywood film role in The Hot Chick (2002). McAdams continued to thrive in “chick flicks” and romance movies such as Mean Girls (2004) and The Notebook (2004). She also branched out into roles in dramas such as The Time Traveler’s Wife (2009), Every Thing Will Be Fine (2015), and the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Doctor Strange (2016).

Matthew Perry

Matthew Perry was born to a Canadian mother and an American father, granting him dual citizenship. While he initially appeared in various sitcom roles during his early career, it was his breakthrough with the iconic sitcom Friends (1994 – 2004) that propelled him to widespread fame. His performance as the sarcastic and witty Chandler Bing solidified his status as a TV star.

In addition to his acting career, Perry shared his personal life in his memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, diving into his struggles with addiction, navigating the highs and lows of fame, and his experiences on and off the screen. After his passing in late 2023, the National Philanthropic Trust established the Matthew Perry Foundation to support those suffering from addiction.

Keanu Reeves

In addition to the native Hawaiian, Chinese, Irish, English, and Portuguese in his blood, Keanu Reeves was born in Beirut, Lebanon, and then raised in Toronto, Canada – talk about a global tapestry of heritage! And yet, that’s no comparison to his extensive filmography and TV ventures.

Reeves is best known for his action-packed roles, including computer hacker Neo in the science fiction movie The Matrix (1999) and its sequels, as well as John Wick in the John Wick films. He is also known for his roles in lighthearted movies like the classic Bill and Ted’s trilogy and Hardball (2001), an American sports comedy film about a gambler who, instead of hitting up new casinos that are highly rated, agrees to coach a Little League baseball team in the Chicago projects to pay off his debts with two bookies.

Michael J. Fox

Michael J. Fox was born in the Canadian Rockies in Edmonton, Alberta. In 1986, 1987, and 1988, he won three Emmy Awards for his portrayal of Alex P. Keaton in the sitcom Family Ties (1982 – 1989). Following his incredible performances in Teen Wolf (1985) and Back to the Future (1985), he quickly became a teen idol. Throughout his career, he’s also played roles in Curb Your Enthusiasm (2011 & 2017), Scrubs (2004), Casualties of War (1989), and more. Fox is now retired from acting and devotes much of his free time to running The Michael J. Fox Foundation, which helps advance research into curing Parkinson’s disease. Since going public with his Parkinson’s disease in 1998, he’s become an inspiring figure for Parkinson’s awareness.
