‘Captain Marvel’ Directing Gig Reportedly Down To Three Ladies

Aug 24, 2016

We’ve been hearing for months that we would learn the name of the director of Marvel’s Captain Marvel by the end of the summer. The Hollywood Reporter now claims three women are up for the gig as previous contender Niki Caro (Whale Rider, North Country, The Zookeeper’s Wife) along with newcomers like veteran television director  Lesli Linka Glatter (Homeland, The Walking Dead, Justified, Mad Men, True Blood, Now and Then) and Lorene Scafaria (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, Seeking A Friend For The End of The World, New Girl).

All three are excellent choices, but to us the big standout is Kiwi director Niki Caro, as we wrote a feature article supporting her months back.

Caro had been previously linked for the job alongside Aussie director Jennifer Kent months back. The new report reaffirms Babadook‘s Kent was in the running along with Kung Fu Panda 2‘s Jennifer Yuh.

Of course, Brie Larson will be playing the titular Captain Marvel aka Carol Danvers, who may or may not be showing up first in Avengers: Infinity War.

It’s expected to begin production next fall or early 2018, with a massive amount of pre-production needed. Hiring someone now makes sense for Marvel to get the beats down for the character if she is going to be in Infinity War first. The release date is set for March 8th, 2019.
