‘Captain Marvel’ Tells Origin of Marvel’s Most Powerful Hero; Director Named By End of Year

Oct 23, 2016

While on the promotional grind for Marvel’s next big superhero film Doctor Strange, Kevin Feige switched gears while speaking with Vulture. During the interview he touched upon Captain Marvel, revealing when we’ll learn the director’s name.

The Brie Larson superhero film will seemingly indeed focus on her cosmic origin, Kevin also reveals that Danvers will become the most powerful Marvel superhero they have.

screen-shot-2016-10-23-at-6-53-29-amI expect to have a director by the end of the year. We’ve been meeting amazing filmmakers, but often the way we work, as was the case on Doctor Strange and most of our movies, is that we have a … I don’t want to say a ‘road map,’ but we have a general view of what the movie is and then we meet with filmmakers and share that with them and then they pitch it back to us in a better fashion.”

“With Captain Marvel,” continued Feige, “there’s so much potential in the comics and there have been so many incarnations of her powers and the characters who’ve had that mantle that we’ve been focusing in on exactly how do we tell her origin. How does it fit into the cosmic side of our universe? How does it fit into what we’re doing with the next Avengers movies? So really, that’s what’s been delaying that particular announcement.”

This sounds like they’ll be making an official announcement concerning a director sometime in December.

The last names connected to the latest shortlist includes Niki Caro (Whale Rider, North Country, Zookeeper’s Wife, Callas), Lesli Linka Glatter (Now and Then, Walking Dead, Newsroom, Homeland, Mad Men, West Wing), and Lorene Scafaria (New Girl, Seeking A Friend For The End of the World).

Other potential candidates are Jennifer Kent, Rebecca Thomas, Emily Charmichael and Elizabeth Wood.

There are some rather talented people here and I think fans would be lucky to land any of them.

Feige also dropped a big character tease, that Danvers will be the most powerful superhero in the cinematic universe.

“All of the Marvel characters have flaws to them, all of them have a deep humanity to them. With Captain Marvel, she is as powerful a character as we’ve ever put in a movie. Her powers are off the charts, and when she’s introduced, she will be by far the strongest character we’ve ever had. It’s important, then, to counterbalance that with someone who feels real. She needs to have a humanity to tap into, and Brie can do that.”

Captain Marvel is rumored to begin shooting in fall 2017 and is officially set for release on March 8th, 2019.
