As Editor in Chief of Geeks With Wives it’s my job to ingest as much geek culture as possible. So when I compiled my end of the year best of list I wanted to make sure to include as many corners of the geek universe as I could. If you’re an avid listener to the Geeks With Wives & Capes podcast or know me personally then none of these selections will be much of a surprise but for the rest of you here is what I thought was the best of the best in the world of geek for 2014.

Best TV Show of the Year: The Flashtheflash
TV has had the awesome pleasure of becoming geek central this year with a plethora of comic book inspired TV shows hitting the airways. The Flash is not only the best of these show new or old but it is also the most comic bookey. With no fear to pull straight from the source material The Flash embodies everything I could ever want from a comic book TV show. Cool costume, super powers galore, intrigue, comedy and of course Super Villains a plenty.

*Runner up: Game of Thrones

guardian-of-the-galaxy-poster1Best Movie of the Year: Guardians of the Galaxy
Comic books are taking over the world and it all started with Marvel studios and it’s unbelievable plan to bring your favorite superheroes to life on the big screen. While many have tried and are trying to bring amazing comic book properties to the masses none has done it better than Marvel. Guardians of the Galaxy was not only the best movie to come out this year but it maybe Marvels best movie to date Bringing the ragtag team of miscreants to the big screen was a feat unto itself, but making it a fantastic film beloved by all was achieving the impossible… and they did it.

*Runner up: Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Best Game of the Year: Super Smash Bros. Wii Usmash 2.0
While comic books are my first love video games are definitely my second. With a new console generation upon us this year I have been full engulfed in the console war, playing as many games and platforms as humanly possible. Super Smash Bros. Wii U is by far my favorite game of the year. It’s fast paced, hyper chaotic combat is beautiful and full realized on the Wii U. This is the one game out in 2014 I will continue to play from now until it’s next iteration.

*Runner up: Mario Kart 8

IMGP5586 (469x640)Best Cosplay of the Year: Balloon Voltron
Now this category was by far my hardest choice and the one I agonized over the most. I have seen so much Cosplay this year between our own weekly features, to social media, and of course conventions that I had to choose the one cosplay that really took my breath away. The all Balloon Voltron from Stan Lee’s Comikaze was truly a site to behold. A young man had carefully crafted, designed and carefully assembled a complete Voltron costume made up entirely of balloons. It was a beautiful sight of rubber and color as he walked the convention floor. This cosplay must have taken an unimaginable amount of patients, time, and skill for what could have been a very short lived experience if you made the slightest mistake.

*Runner up: Dracula from Dracula: Untold, Zappon Cosplay Contest Winner.

Best Comic of the Year: Southern BastardsSouthern Bastards (640x486)
Surprisingly this was my easiest selection this year as Jason Aaron’s Southern Bastards has been by far my most enjoyable comics’ experience. Southern Bastards is published by Image comics who are also probably the year’s best comic’s publisher as they continue to put out books that push boundaries in every direction. Southern Bastards is a fantastic story crafted by Jason Aaron and Jason Latour that explores you unique culture that is America’s south. Its Friday Night Lights meets Goodfellas and I can’t get enough. After I turn the final page on the current issue I immediately count down the days until the next. Southern Bastards has been an engaging, violent and shocking experience I would have never expected from a comic about the south and football.

*Runner Up: Amazing Spider-Man

Most Anticipated Geek Event of 2015: No Man’s Sky
2015 has a ton of amazing geeky-ness in store. From comics, movie to video games 2015 maybe the geekiest year ever. In 2015 we will get to enjoy a new Star Wars, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Halo 5, Uncharted 4, and TV shows like Powers or Krypton. But nothing has me more excited for 2015 than Hello Games’ No Man’s Sky. This infinite procedurally generated universe is everything I could ever want from a video game. I will finally get to explore and try to survive in a universe with infinite possibilities. If No Man’s Sky can deliver on all of its promises I am certain it will be a game that changes the way we look at what video games can be forever. No Man’s Sky will surely take my life away as I’m allowed to journey the stars and explore the unknown.

*Runner Up: Star Wars The Force Awakens
