Chris Hemsworth Hints Jessica Chastain Should Play A Villain In ‘Thor: Ragnarok’

Dec 31, 2015

A couple weeks ago, Chris Hemsworth while promoting his film In The Heart of The Sea was asked which one of his Huntsman co-stars he’d like to see play a villain in Thor: Ragnarok. He responded with Jessica Chastain, who just happens to also co-star with Loki’s Tom Hiddleston in Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak and Winter Soldier’s Sebastian Stan in The Martian.

“Oh God, don’t make me pick one… maybe Jessica, but only because [Emily Blunt and Charlize Theron] are already villains in our film.”

This quote came only a couple of days before the report that Oscar winner Cate Blanchett had landed an “unnamed role” in the project, many assume it’s a villain but nothing concrete is backing-up that speculation. I get the impression many would like to see Jessica reunite with Hiddleston as Amora The Enchantress, but we still have no idea if that character will end-up in the film or not.

To think there’s only one role Cate Blanchett could be playing in the film is very short-sighted, considering that we have a very reputable source with BDM stating Valkyrie is apart of the character lineup.

We know that there’s at least two new female characters in the film, one a villain and the other is said to be Brunhilde The Valkyrie (an Avenger and Defender). It’s not hard to imagine that Chastain joining the project or at least meeting with the studio, she has been courted twice before by Marvel for both decently sized female roles in Ant-Man and Iron Man 3. The potential villain that role could includes Hela, Amora The Enchantress, and even Karnilla The Norn Queen, we still have no idea the volume of characters in the third film and how many villains we’ll be looking at.

There’s still rumblings that Surtur will show up at some point in the film too.

Jessica has come out in the press to reveal she’d only do a superhero film if she was able to wear a cool costume as the hero or play a villain, and as long as she had fight scenes. Turning down Marvel roles like Maya and Hope are likely due to their on-the-bench supporting nature in those films.

The actress has even been rumored for Captain Marvel talks, so having her join the Ragnarok cast could only help the project gather steam. She did confirm to MTV that she was talking with the studio about future roles other than Captain Marvel.

“We’ve talked about aligning our forces in the future,” Chastain said. “And here’s the thing with me… If you’re going to be in a superhero movie, you only get one chance. You’re that character forever. So why do a superhero movie and play the boring civilian?”

“Whatever it is, I want a fight scene,” Chastain continued. “I could be an incredible villain. I could be a hero. I want a cool outfit, and I want to kick ass.”

I don’t totally dismiss the idea of Cate playing a villain, but Valkyrie is the kind of character that could be played by her. However, pairing-up Chastain and Blanchett as villains in the film could be worthwhile as well. We know that Hela controlled Valkyrie and Surtur controlled Amora at different points in the mythology, so anything could really happen.
