Chris Pirri’s Top 30 Horror Movies: #20 Hellraiser (1987)

Oct 14, 2015

Its October and that means Halloween is almost here. In honor of my favorite holiday of the year I give to you my top thirty horror movies. Now some of these films might be on every list, but some might not. I might even have a film or two that you have never heard of. Just remember this is my top thirty. In other words these films made me cringe or just sent chills up my spine. So with no further ado here is my list

# 20
Hellraiser (1987)
Directed by: Clive Barker

When you mention some of the best horror villains of all time Hellraiser’s Pinhead will and should be on every list. I can tell you he is at the top of my list. That’s right he is my favorite horror figure of all time. Nothing beats Pinhead or as he was known in a previous life Elliott Spencer. Just the mere image of Pinhead can bring shivers and chills down any sane persons back.

Clive Barker did an excellent job of bringing his book ” The Hellbound Heart” to the big screen in Hellraiser. Maybe to good of a job. He had to cut a lot of scenes in this movie out just to get a R rating, it originally got an X rating for extreme erotic scenes and violence.

The story revolves around Frank who happens to buy a puzzle box. Otherwise known as Lemarchand’s box.

What Frank will soon find out is this box just happens to be a portal to hell. Or maybe it’s much more then that? Once Frank solves the puzzle we finally meet Pinhead. Along with his other fiendish friends called Cenobites.

This is where the violence starts. We see Frank get pulled a part by chains until his body is in pieces and explodes. When his brothers blood gets into the floorboards we see Frank is still in the house and is slowly coming back to life. His ex-lover who just happens to be his brothers current wife finds out. So she brings strangers back to the house for Frank to feed on.

Hellraiser is so good that it spun out eight more films. Two more that Clive Barker is associated with. If you are a horror fan this is a must see, but be warned you will never look at a Rubik’s Cube the same.
