CinemaCon 18: Universal Studios Panel

Universal this year added a black carpet and multiple stages to their CinemaCon presentation. They started off with a new trailer of Illumination Animation studios adaptation of The Grinch Who Stole Christmas as well as announcing Minions 2 and The Secret Life Of Pets sequels release years for 2020 alongside Sing 2  which is in development with no current release year. Harrison Ford will also be making his first animated appearance The Secret Life Of Pets 2.

Following up with Ryan Gosling and Damien Chazelle director of the Oscar-winning film La La Land to promote their new film First Man. A dramatic retelling of Neal Armstrong’s race with Russia to have the first man on the moon and the hardships he must endure in space as well as in his own home. Horror Director Eli Roth and Jack Black appeared next with an Amblin green-lit production The House With a Clock in Its Walls. Showing a soon to be released trailer of the PG thriller.

Universal this year decided to highlight their horror film slate. Bringing out Jason Blum of Blumhouse productions to showcase their next 3 films in development. The First Purge started it off showing us the previously released trailer quickly bringing out the Scream Queen herself Jaime Lee Curtis to show us the first trailer for the 2018 Halloween continuation produced by John Carpenter. Curtis assured us this installation of the series will fix the pieces of shit that were H2O and Halloween Resurrection.

M. Night Shyamalan surprised us all with Bruce Willis and the main cast of his up and coming sequel to the film Split. Glass join’s together the movie universes of the 2000 film Unbreakable  with the Antagonist of 2016’s Split. Samuel L. Jackson is reprising the Role of Elijah Price as shown alongside James Macavoy’s character Kevin as shown in the soon to be released trailer for Glass.

Kevin Hart who started off the programming of the evening returned to show a new trailer for his upcoming film Night School accompanied by Tiffany Haddish. Lord Of The Rings director Peter Jackson unfortunately could not attend but gave us a rough cut trailer of his recent film in production The Mortal Engines. Showing us Hugo Weavings character and scenes giving us a look at the steam punk worlds to come.

Next, came Dream Works Animations with yet another How to Train Your Dragon. This third installment of the series shows Hiccup as an adult and just where all the dragons are disappearing too. Toothless also develops a crush on another dragon which of course gets abducted by the films antagonist. Dwayne Johnson unfortunately could not attend as well due to the birth of his daughter but instead delivered to us a new trailer for Skyscraper which added new elements to the story as well as adding Nieve Cambell to the cast.

Saving the best for last Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt came out to promote Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom with a new extended trailer. Then, Came Amanda Seyfried to announce the most redundant sequel of the year Mama Mia 2. With the full cast returning were given a cringe riddled trailer along with a performance of “Fernando” by Cher.
