I recently challenged a friend of mine, who is a fellow cosplayer, to a #GrootOff. What is a #GrootOff? This is where we both pick the same costume or prop, and we challenge each other to build it. In this case we are building Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy. There are no rules other than everything that relates to costumes, must be built by hand. (Stilts would be the only exception to the rule). By participating in this challenge, we are forcing ourselves to learn new things and experiment with ideas to see what might work but also what doesn’t. I will do my best to document on video some of my tips and tricks I have seen and come up with myself, so that you too, can join us in the #GrootOff!

This is the first of the video series where I show the process in which I made the wood grain on the Groot mask. If you would like to test out this method, you will need the following:

thick work gloves*
safety glasses*
a respirator*
Foam (I used EVA floor mats but it will work on craft foam also)
an exacto or a sharp craft knife
heat gun or high temp hair dryer

*Remember, Safety first. (Do as I say, Not as I do! Wasn’t wearing gloves in video)

I hope you enjoy the video and I can not wait to see your entry for the #GrootOff! Remember to subscribe to our YouTube Channel so you can catch all of the #GrootOff video tutorials!
