Could Former ‘Deadpool 2’ Candidate Drew Goddard End Up Writing/Directing ‘Deadpool 3’?

Feb 23, 2017

It was just reported by Collider, that Oscar-nominated screenwriter Drew Goddard (Cabin In The Woods, The Martian, Cloverfield, Daredevil) would be a consultant on the Deadpool 2 script.

One interesting aspect, Drew Goddard was once in the mix to direct Deadpool 2 after Tim Miller exited last year.

Leitch’s name first emerged Monday, but insiders said the studio and producers were meeting with other potential candidates. Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods) and Magnus Martens, a director on Marvel’s Netflix series Luke Cage, were other filmmakers mentioned on the studio’s meeting list. But Leitch’s name remained consistently on top of the list and the director met with Reynolds in New York on Thursday, according to sources.

John Wick and Atomic Blonde’s David Leitch was hired not too long after candidates were revealed.

We’re curious if Drew’s current participation with the Deadpool franchise might have something to do with the reported development on Deadpool 3.

The Hollywood Reporter had previously stated that both Deadpool 3 and X-Force were projects in development stages at 20th Century Fox.

And in a sign of how much faith it has in the Reynolds-starring franchise, Fox already is planning Deadpool 3, readying a filmmaker search for a storyline that will involve another X-team, X-Force, say sources.

Joe Carnahan (Narcs, The Grey, Bad Boys For Life) was revealed yesterday as writing the new incarnation of the X-Force script taking over from Jeff Wadlow (his draft was tossed). This could mean that someone might be writing Deadpool 3 as well.

Like Carnahan, Drew is also a director making his debut with the well-received horror comedy Cabin In The Woods which he co-wrote with Avengers’ Joss Whedon. Drew was the original showrunner on Marvel TV’s Daredevil before exiting to focus on Sony’s Sinister Six spinoff which would eventually get killed. He was even mentioned as being in the mix to direct Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Add that he was courted for Deadpool 2 he obviously wants to direct a Marvel project badly.

I don’t see Goddard directing X-Force, mainly because he’s not writing it and we’ve heard other names like Ghost In The Shell’s Rupert Sanders in the mix. Leaving him with the potential to tackle a third Deadpool movie.

We’ve seen Fox recently quickly put together X-Men projects quickly before and hiring Goddard to bump-out a draft for Deadpool 3 while Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are busy with the Deadpool 2 production isn’t hard to imagine.

Both X-Force and Deadpool 3 are said to be priorities at the moment and striking while the iron is hot just might be the key. Hiring new proven screenwriters and directors might be just how Fox gets these two other films completed in a short matter of time, but keeping the quality intact.

It begs the question, will Drew co-write and direct Deadpool 3 for Fox?
