David Goyer Writing ‘Green Lantern Corps’ Script With Justin Rhodes; Stewart Confirmed

Jan 12, 2017

Warner Bros. has announced that Green Lantern Corps. finally has screenwriters attached as David Goyer (Batman Begins, Blade) and Justin Rhodes to tackle the script for the studio.

The project as reported by Deadline is said to be a buddy flick not unlike Lethal Weapon pairing Hal Jordan with John Stewart.

Warner Bros and DC are moving aggressively on a new screen version of Green Lantern. They’ve set David Goyer to write the script with Justin Rhodes for Green Lantern Corps, with Goyer producing and with DC heads Geoff Johns and Jon Berg exec producing.

The new version is described as Lethal Weapon in space, and it’s based on a comic book origin story. The focus will be on two characters: Hal Jordan, and John Stewart. The latter is African American. It’s unclear whether the studio would re-engage with Ryan Reynolds, who starred in the first version and is soaring with Deadpool.

A director, production start or release date haven’t been made official. It was previously mentioned by the studio they were aiming for the film to be ready for release between 2019-2020.

On the Ryan Reynolds front, the actor himself has blocked-off any possibility of his return to the Hal Jordan role via IGN.

We’re still hopeful that Warner Bros. will come to their senses and hire Idris Elba for the role of Stewart. Along with Dark Knight Returns and former Suicide Squad cast member Tom Hardy in the Hal Jordan part. If they’re truly going for a Lethal Weapon feel hiring this pair is my first choice.

It was rumored that Warner Bros. had offered the project to Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller.
