Disney Rebooting ‘The Rocketeer’ With ‘The Rocketeers’ Starring Black Female Lead

Jul 28, 2016

The Hollywood Reporter has word that Disney is rebooting the cult-favorite The Rocketeer. The new film is said to be a modern take with the working title The Rocketeers, and their aim is to have a black female lead.

Walt Disney Studios is developing a reboot of the 1991 action adventure movie, hiring Max Winkler and Matt Spicer to pen the script for the project, which is being titled The Rocketeers.

The project, in the early development stages, is being looked at as a sequel-reboot and in a modern-day twist, will be headlined by a black female character.

The Joe Johnson-directed movie starred Billy Campbell as Secord, Jennifer Connelly as his aspiring actress (and Betty Page homage) girlfriend, and Timothy Dalton as an Errol Flynn-type actor who is a Nazi Spy, and Alan Arkin as Secord’s mechanic.

The original film took place in the 40’s and had it’s lead combating Nazis, it’ll be interesting to see what the new threat will be.

Disney has been very excited about putting Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o in a bunch of their films including Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Jungle Book, Marvel’s Black Panther and Star Wars: Episode VIII, so I wouldn’t be shocked if they looked to her to be this new lead.
