A deal has been struck! Today, Walt Disney and Sony Pictures jointly announced that a brand new deal has been made to keep Spider-Man and star Tom Holland in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This comes off the past month as it looked like Peter Parker may really be leaving the MCU after the two companies couldn’t make a deal on the character.
“I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it. Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.” – Kevin Feige
The initial deal fell through as Disney after making the first two Spider-Man films on a 5% gross revenue wanted the new deal to include a 50/50 split between both studios. Sony obviously refused this as Disney already owns full merchandising rights plus the 5%. So late Thursday night the top brass from both companies came to the arrangement that Disney will now make 25% of gross plus their merchandising rights. Amy Pascal will return and co-produce the next solo films alongside Kevin Feige once again.
“This is terrific. Peter Parker’s story took a dramatic turn in ‘Far From Home’ and I could not be happier we will all be working together as we see where his journey goes.” – Amy Pascal
Tom Holland is also set to return as the beloved web-slinger in his third solo film July 16, 2021. As well as appear in several upcoming crossover events. It is unknown at this time if director Jon Watts will also return given he only had a two-picture deal before the overall deal fell through. It is also unknown what will become of the Spider-Verse that Sony has been developing which includes Venom and Morbius. Will the Spidey-Verse reference the MCU; while the MCU not mention the Spidey-Verse? Time will tell.
