Legendary action star Dolph Lundgren has threw his name into the hat to play the merc with a mouth’s time traveling Mutant friend Cable in Deadpool 2. Dolph said the following to Nerdist regarding his interest in the role: “I haven’t watched a lot of these superhero movies; for some reason, I don’t know, I’m just busy making films. I did hear in… Deadpool, isn’t there a character named Cable that’s coming? Like, he’s a big guy? I guess I could kick some butt doing that, I suppose. We’ll see. When I saw the picture, he looks a little bit like Ivan Drago mixed with Gunner Jensen mixed with… I don’t know.”
Dolph Lundgren usually isn’t my first choice these days to when it comes to casting a title role in a major superhero franchise, however in this case I think it makes perfect sense. The above quote shows us that Lundgren doesn’t know that much about the Cable character, other than the fact that he has the look for it. That alone has me interested to see the aging action star in the role, let’s face it Lundgren isn’t getting any best acting nods at the Oscars, but neither is the role of Cable. Anyone who has seen Lundgren in the Expendable’s franchise know the actor still know’s his way around an action set while toting a semi automatic. And what more would he have to do for a Cable role? Also, the actors age shouldn’t be held against him, because the character of Cable has some age on him due to his time spent throughout his time travels. Can you imagine the fourth wall breaking jokes and quips that Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool could make poking fun at the washed up action star in the role, I can hear it now: “Really Fox, this old ass guy is the best we could f-ing get with our budget? Ivan Drago, He-man, Really?”
Also remember this wouldn’t be Lundgren’s first crack at playing a Marvel character as the actor portrayed the Punisher in the character’s feature film debut. However I think Marvel fans could rest easy that his second attempt would end up better than the first, even if Fox is in charge.
Deadpool 2 is expected to hit theaters sometime in 2017!
