Donald Glover joins ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’

Jun 14, 2016

It’s pretty well-known that Donald Glover is a Spider-Man fan. He has even referenced the masked-hero in his rap songs, under his moniker Childish Gambino.

In one of my favorite songs of his, “Not Going Back”, he raps “…couldn’t see me in Spider-Man, now I’m spittin’ Venom”. This was in regards to fans petitioning for Glover to play Spider-Man in the 2012 reboot. Sony instead went with Andrew Garfield for the role.

In the same film, there was a photo of Donald Glover’s character from Community, Troy Barnes, on the wall of Parker’s room.

Glover was also the inspiration for the other Spider-Man, Miles Morales, who debuted in 2011. He even voiced the character in the Ultimate Spider-Man TV series.

Watch a clip from his stand up special discussing the fan petition:

We may not see Glover portray Spidey on the big screen but it appears him joining the cast will be the closest we’ll get to see this.

No word on who he’ll play yet.

Spider-Man: Homecoming stars Tom Holland, Marisa Tomei, Robert Downey Jr, Michael Keaton, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori and now Donald Glover. Spider-Man: Homecoming will hit theaters July 7th, 2017.
