Update 1/16: The Illuminerdi has reported that Hulkling is being cast for ‘WandaVision.’ Marvel Studios is looking for a 16-23 year old male to play a a Skrull who requires help from S.W.O.R.D. in order to remain safely on Earth.
Coinciding with the reveal of the cover of Marvel Comics’ Empyre event, which features Hulkling, AKA Teddy Altman, Marvel Studios has begun its search for the Young Avenger. We at the GWW have received a casting breakdown for the character. The timing is logical, with Marvel Studios deep into the casting of other Young Avengers such as Wiccan, Speed, and Hawkeye for the MCU.
Marvel Studios is looking for a male between the ages of 15 and 20 to play Hulkling for a project filming sometime this year. The age range is similar to Emma Fuhrmann, who plays Cassie Lang, another Young Avenger.
Hulkling first appeared inĀ Young AvengersĀ #1, and it was later revealed in the comic that he is the son of Mar-Vell, the original Captain Marvel, and Skrull princess Anelle. With the powers of both a legendary Kree and a Skrull, Teddy Altman is able to shapeshift and has super strength, among other abilities. He is also the boyfriend of Billy Kaplan, Wiccan, the son of Scarlet Witch. In the MCU, Mar-Vell is an older woman who died, so it is unlikely she is Teddy’s mother. However, in the comics, Mar-Vell had two children, Genis-Vell and Phylla-Vell. Phylla-Vell has been rumored to be coming to the MCU, as well, but Genis-Vell could potentially replace Mar-Vell as Teddy’s father.
The most likely projects that this casting could be for, in order, are ‘Ms. Marvel,’ ‘WandaVision,’ or ‘Ant-Man 3.’ Although Hulkling is traditionally not part of Kamala Khan’s supporting cast, his Kree ancestry connects him to the content of the upcoming Disney+ series, which is set to begin production in April. While ‘WandaVision’ is deep into production, Teddy is Billy’s boyfriend, and with Billy likely to appear in the series, having Teddy appear in the last episode as his boyfriend would make sense. Finally, although Ant-Man 3 isn’t set to start filming until next January, the connections to Cassie Lang as a Young Avenger make it possible that this casting call is for the film.
‘WandaVision’ is set to release in late 2020, while ‘Ms. Marvel’ and ‘Ant-Man 3’ are currently undated. However, ‘Ms. Marvel’ is likely to arrive sometime in 2021 and ‘Ant-Man 3’ is likely to release February 18, 2022.
