Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher are ramping up to cast their new Netflix comedy, and we have the details.
First up is the lead, Devi, who is based on Kaling when she was a child.
15 years old, South Asian, very smart, very intense, an academically competitive hothead with a short fuse, Devi lives in Sherman Oaks, where her parents immigrated from India in 2001 for a better life. Devi is a resilient young woman who likes to take life by the horns and bend it to her will, which doesn’t always work out in her favor, hence the short fuse. Devi has had some trouble in her life–after her dad died during one of her high school recitals she lost the use of her legs for three months–but she’s determined to turn things around during her sophomore year in high school, and become the “normal” all American girl she’s always wanted to be…

Filming on the 10-episode show is set to begin at the end of July in Los Angeles. The series hails from Kaling, Fisher, Howard Kelin, and David Miner, with Kaling and Fisher writing. No release date has been set.
