According to a report in The Hollywood Reporter, HBO is staking the future of the Game of Thrones franchise in the past.
The network has greenlit a pilot for the currently unnamed Game of Thrones prequel series from Game of Thrones writer George RR Martin and Jane Goldman (Kingsman, Kick-Ass). The pilot is based on story by the pair with Goldman providing the screenplay for the pilot episode. Both will serve as executive producers on the series and Goldman will take on the showrunner role.
The plot of the series takes place thousands of years before the events of A Song of Ice and Fire. It will chronicle the descent of the world from a Golden Age of Heroes to its darkest hours. The logline for the series teased some of the plot details but not much;
“Only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend — it’s not the story we think we know.”
HBO programming chief Casey Bloys assures fans of the series that any greenlit Thrones prequel will air “at least a year after the final season”.
