Fox has decided to take the gloves off with their movie announcements. After giving fans a glimpse into the upcoming future of the X-Men franchise, the studio has also given us the release dates for the next four (!!!!) Avatar sequels.
James Cameron has been working on the sequels to the global phenomenon Avatar since it was released on 2009. The innovative filmmaker behind smash hit films like Terminator, The Abyss and Titanic has always been on the forefront of new advances in technology that he can utilize for storytelling. From groundbreaking practical effects to cutting edge digital effects, Cameron has continued to bring new and innovative stories to life.
With that in mind, the next four Avatar movies should be visually wonderous with a story that will seemingly span across the next decade. The first sequel Avatar 2 is scheduled for release December 18, 2020. The next movie will follow a year later with Avatar 3 opening December 17, 2021.
In an ambitious move, the remaining two Avatar sequels will debut after a three-year hiatus with Avatar 4 opening in theaters December 20, 2024 with Avatar 5 following it the year after on December 19, 2025.
The original Avatar earned over $2.8 Billion worldwide and remains the highest grossing film of all time worldwide. The original film has inspired everything from theme park attractions to a Cirque Du Soleil stage show. No word on which actors will be returning to reprise their roles, but there is talk that Sigourney Weaver is confirmed to return. This is definitely an ambitious undertaking for both the filmmaker and the studio and hopefully, fans will reap the benefit.
