Wars between Heaven and Hell seem to be a reoccurring theme in all forms of entertainment, but the story never gets old because each storyteller spins it differently. Graywalkers: Purgatory gives us a post-apocalyptic world where Heaven, Hell, and Earth have all merged in “The Rupture” and we play the leader of the Graywalkers. The ultimate goal: gather all the Graywalkers and charge into battle to reclaim Earth!

Graywalkers takes all the fun of tabletop RPGs and leaves out the constant bombardment of math that tends to slow things down. Also, that GM who has it out for you? Gone. Developed by Dreamlords Digital, Graywalkers: Purgatory is the first in a series of strategic and tactical turn-based 3D Role Playing Games. It definitely pulls inspiration from elements of XCom, Jagged Alliance, Fallout, Baldur’s Gate, and Civilization.

Guys, this game has it all. Detailed character customization, many awesome races to choose (including Wolfkin…so, I’m sold), different modes of play, over 50 playable NPCs you can recruit – all with their own personality and detailed lives! I could go on, but there is just so much to talk about.

Plenty of character customization and fantastic details in the graphics.

I got to play around with a combat demo of the game, to get a feel of how it will work. The stats of the characters work just as a tabletop game would, determining order of character turns and how many actions they are capable of. It was really nice to actually get to see the turn order list. I had trouble with the size of all the characters on my screen. They were all so small and eventually got so packed together that it became difficult to select my targets. This, however, could be because I chose to use my mouse to play and not the keyboard. In the final version of the game I believe that this will not be an issue, or there will be options to change your viewing distance. (10/16/14 8:59 PM Edit: Turns out they did already have view controls enabled and I didn’t notice. Many apologies.) And speaking of viewing, the environment looks amazing with attention to detail that could rival Diablo 3.

At this point it would be rude to review this game based on the usual stats, as it is currently unfinished and I only played a small demo. I can say, however, that I am excited to get my hands on the finished product as soon as I can.

Yay.
