Another gestating project from filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is back in the works: ‘Nightmare Alley.’
But that’s not the best part, as Leonardo DiCaprio is currently in talks to star in the film.
According to Borys Kit of The Hollywood Reporter, DiCaprio had a choice to make between del Toro, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Of the scripts, del Toro came out victorious.
Speaking of Alejandro G. Iñárritu, DiCaprio was last in ‘The Revenant,’ which got him his long-overdue Academy Award for Best Actor. Other popular credits of his include James Cameron’s ‘Titanic,’ Christopher Nolan’s ‘Inception,’ and Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Wolf of Wall Street.’ Next, he has Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,’ releasing July 26th.
The most recent film from del Toro is ‘The Shape of Water,’ which won Best Picture, Directing, Score, and Production Design at the Academy Awards. Another project in the works is Netflix’s ‘Pinocchio,’ which is currently in pre-production, releasing in 2021. On that film, he’ll be director, producer and co-writer, with Patrick McHale (‘Over the Garden Wall’).
Meanwhile, ‘Nightmare Alley’ will have del Toro serve as director and co-writer, with Kim Morgan (‘The Forbidden Room’).
The premise of the novel (of the same name) is below:
“A study of the lowest depths of showbiz and its sleazy inhabitants – the dark, shadowy world of a second rate carnival filled with hustlers, scheming grifters, and Machiavellian femmes fatales.”
Additionally, cinematographer Dan Laustsen will reunite with del Toro on this film. The two were together for ‘Crimson Peak’ and ‘The Shape of Water.’ Laustsen also did Chad Stahelski’s ‘John Wick: Chapter 2,’ and returned for the follow-up ‘John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum,’ releasing May 17th.
Further, filming will begin this fall. More casting announcements will come soon.
Fox Searchlight has not set a release date as of now.
