Indie Director Cathy Yan Tapped To Direct DC’s ‘Birds of Prey’ Featuring Harley Quinn

Apr 17, 2018

Last year it was revealed that DC Comics was looking to make several films that would feature fan-favorite character Harley Quinn played by Margot Robbie. This comes after her stellar performance in 2016’s Suicide Squad. While most of the film was a let down her performance was one of the films top accolades.

Robbie started to work on a Harley Quinn “solo” film with her production company LuckyChap. While other films like Suicide Squad 2, Harley Quinn vs The Joker and Gotham City Sirens were also in developing all featuring Quinn. Now, according to Variety indie director Cathy Yan has been tapped by DC and Warner Brothers to direct the Harley Quinn spin-off movie. Which is expected to be based off the Birds of Prey comic that also features heroes Batgirl, Black Canary and The Huntress. The CW also had a short-lived live-action series based on the same characters back in the early 2000’s around the time of Smallville.

Robbie made it clear by the higher-ups at WB she wanted a female director to direct her film. While Yan beat out many veteran male directors. This also marks the first time a female Asian-American director has been given the reigns to a superhero film. With only James Wan directing Aquaman for DC and WB being the only other; which is being released later this year.

Birds of Prey is expected to begin production by the end of the year. It’s unknown how much of Margot Robbie will be used in Suicide Squad 2 which is also slated to start production later this year. Robbie is also in negotiations to star in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood as Sharon Tate.
