Disney has reinstated James Gunn to write and direct ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.’ Gunn was originally going to helm the last film in the trilogy, until he was fired last July. This was due to the resurfacing of old tweets from 2008 and 2009, where he made insensitive and controversial jokes.
Deadline had the exclusive, and has this to say on the matter:
“Why the change of heart? After the firing, Walt Disney Studios president Alan Horn met with Gunn on multiple occasions to discuss the situation. Persuaded by Gunn’s public apology and his handling of the situation after, Horn decided to reverse course and reinstate Gunn.”
However, the film will no longer make its original release date of May 1, 2020.
This is because Gunn is still onboard to make Warner Bros. and DC’s ‘The Suicide Squad.’ His condition was that he would direct ‘Vol. 3’ after he completes ‘The Suicide Squad.’
‘The Suicide Squad’ will begin filming this September in Atlanta.
We do not know when ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ will release at the moment, but sometime in 2022 is likely.
