James Mangold’s ‘Ford vs Ferrari’ Racing Towards Summer Start In California

Jun 18, 2018

Before Logan director James Mangold tackles the Boba Fett anthology film for Lucasfilm he’ll be making Ford vs Ferrari, a former Michael Mann project which we’ve learned will begin filming this Summer in California.

It’s impressive cast previously reported includes Matt Damon, Christian Bale, Jon Bernthal, and Caitriona Balfe.

Based on a true story, the film follows an eccentric, determined team of American engineers and designers, led by automotive visionary Carroll Shelby [Damon] and his British driver, Ken Miles [Bale], who are dispatched by Henry Ford II with the mission of building from scratch an entirely new automobile with the potential to finally defeat the perennially dominant Ferrari at the 1966 Le Mans World Championship.

The California filming locations will consist of Orange County, Kern County, San Bernardino, and San Rosa.

The film’s crew includes cinematographer Phedon Papamichael, production designer Francois Audouy, and costume designer Daniel Orlandi. James and Phedon previously worked together on 3:10 To Yuma and Oscar-winner Walk The Line.

Fox has yet to give the racing film a release date but we suspect they’ll end up giving it an awards season release next fall.
