Jason Momoa’s ‘Aquaman 2’ Will Begin Pre-Production in 2020, With James Wan Returning to Direct

Jul 31, 2019

According to Variety, the upcoming ‘Aquaman’ sequel will begin pre-production in 2020, with James Wan coming back to direct.

Before he went on to helm ‘Aquaman’ for DC, Wan kickstarted the ‘Saw,’ ‘Insidious,’ and ‘The Conjuring’ franchises. He began his blockbuster career with the eighth highest grossing movie of all time: ‘Furious 7.’ Also, he will direct the pilot of the upcoming Netflix series ‘The Magic Order.’

However, before he does ‘Aquaman 2,’ he will be co-writing and directing an original horror movie, which will begin filming September 23rd in Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, also returning to write the screenplay is David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. He wrote the final draft of the first ‘Aquaman,’ and is a frequent James Wan collaborator, with ‘The Conjuring 2’ and the upcoming ‘The Conjuring 3,’ releasing September 11, 2020.

Jason Momoa will play the titular character once again. There is also the expectation Amber Heard will reprise her role as Mera.

Also, a horror themed spin-off ‘The Trench’ is in the works. That project will focus on the deadly amphibious creatures from the first film.

Further, using the previous film as precedent, ‘Aquaman 2’ will film before or around May 2021.

Warner Bros. will release the ‘Aquaman’ sequel on December 16, 2022.
