New Line Cinema’s long-gestating DC solo film ‘Black Adam’ has yet another update from actor Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson (‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,’ ‘Ballers’), who plays the titular character. Cinematographer Lawrence Sher has come aboard the crew!
Johnson made the announcement on his Twitter:
Larry Sher is a brilliant DP and a great dude!
We just worked together on Jungle Cruise and he’ll also shoot Black Adam. Glad you spent some time with him, Frost. https://t.co/cta3UoxtAT— Dwayne Johnson (@TheRock) November 16, 2019
Sher was recently shot ‘Joker,’ another DC film, that has now made over a billion dollars at the box office. He will be reuniting with Johnson and director Jaume Collet-Serra (‘The Shallows,’ ‘The Commuter’) on this film, as Sher did additional photography on the upcoming ‘Jungle Cruise,’ releasing July 24, 2020. Other credits include Todd Phillips’ ‘The Hangover’ trilogy, Greg Mottola’s ‘Paul,’ and Michael Dougherty’s ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters.’
Moreover, the screenplay is from Adam Sztykiel (‘Due Date,’ ‘Rampage’). Characters that will appear include Stargirl and Atom Smasher, as well as Hawkman, who will face off against Black Adam in the film.
Additionally, back in March, we at The GWW heard the film will pull very heavily from Peter Tomasi and Doug Mahnke’s ‘Black Adam: The Dark Age’ comic. The graphic novel follows Teth-Adam as he seeks to restore his lost powers and resurrect his deceased wife. This journey brings him into conflict with the Justice Society of America, specifically Hawkman, the main villain of the movie. From a Q&A with IMDb, Johnson said that Collet-Serra wants to “create the Dirty Harry of superheroes.”
Further, filming will begin July 2020 in Atlanta, Georgia.
‘Black Adam’ will release December 22, 2021.
