John Boyega Lands Lead Role In ‘Pacific Rim 2’

Jun 6, 2016

John Boyega has seemingly landed a huge starring gig once Star Wars: Episode VIII wraps, as he’s landed a lead role in Pacific Rim 2, according to a report from Deadline.

Legendary Pictures has set Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega for the lead role for the second installment of its Pacific Rim franchise. Steven S. DeKnight is directing Boyega will play the son of the character played by Idris Elba in the del Toro-directed original film.

John will play the son of Idris Elba’s character, we’re a bit curious if he’ll turn out to be the new male lead. Guillermo del Toro isn’t directing the sequel, but Daredevil‘s Steven S. DeKnight will be taking over those duties.

Here’s what del Toro had to say about the casting addition.

“I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”

Oddly enough, previous leads Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi are missing from the press released, they had been originally tapped to return, but it’s unknown if that’s still the case. It’s possible that Legendary is looking for more recognizable leads for the sequel, as Boyega had a main role in a two billion dollar box office hit.

Production will take place later in the year, we assume heading back to Pinewood Studios in Toronto. A new official release date for the film hasn’t been announced by either Legendary Pictures or distributor Universal.
