EXCLUSIVE: ‘John Wick: Chapter 3’ Looks To Be Setting Up Female-Driven Spin-Off ‘Ballerina’

Aug 8, 2018

Last summer, it was reported by Variety that Lionsgate and producer Basil Iwanyk was developing a possible John Wick spin-off titled Ballerina from newcomer screenwriter Shay Hatten.

Ballerina has been described as being in the vein of La Femme Nikita, the 1990 female-centric assassin movie that helped launch the career of filmmaker Luc Besson, but with a more pulpy, hyper-stylized bent a la Quentin Tarantino or Matthew Vaughn.

Details are being kept under the tutu, but the story is known to center on a young woman raised as an assassin who must hunt down the other assassins that murdered her family.

The script hit the studios last week, with Warner Bros. and Universal also vying for it, according to sources. Lionsgate saw in it potential to further grow its Wick franchise (a third movie is now in the works).

Omega Underground has a character breakdown for a ballerina that must look ”vulnerable yet dangerous” and an official set photo that might be teasing that John Wick: Chapter 3 will be planting seeds for this Ballerina spin-off.

[ BALLERINA ]
20-30, Female, Russian look. She will be doing fouettés en pointe for a long time so please do not submit unless this is something you are capable of. The BALLERINA is brimming with emotion and exhaustion, looks vulnerable yet dangerous. Must be a strong actor who can convey this with a look.

Cinematographer Dan Laustsen posted this ballerina set photo on Instagram.

Ballerina still seems to be in early development and has yet to announce a director.

Lionsgate has set the release date for John Wick: Chapter 3 for May 17th, 2019.
