The upcoming ‘Candyman’ movie now has Colman Domingo and Nathan Stewart-Jarrett onboard the cast. The film is a spiritual sequel, and will return to the neighborhood where the legend began: the now-gentrified section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood.
Domingo is currently in two ongoing television shows: AMC’s ‘Fear the Walking Dead’ and HBO’s ‘Euphoria.’ Other credits include Steven Spielberg’s ‘Lincoln,’ Ava DuVernay’s ‘Selma,’ and the Cinemax series ‘The Knick.’ Next, he will appear in Noah Hawley’s ‘Lucy in the Sky,’ releasing October 4th.
Stewart-Jarrett was recently in the Hulu miniseries ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral.’ He had roles in several British television series in the past, such as E4’s ‘Misfits’ and Channel 4’s ‘Utopia.’ Next, he will appear in the BBC/Netflix miniseries ‘Dracula,’ which currently does not have a premiere date.
Meanwhile, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (‘Aquaman,’ ‘Us’) plays an artist who becomes obsessed with the bloody legend. Also, Teyonah Parris (‘Empire,’ ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’) portrays his girlfriend, an art dealer.
The full description of the Abdul-Mateen’s role is below:
“Anthony, a socially pronounced artist in Chicago begins to research the urban legend of Candyman. After investigating the killer’s last known whereabouts, strange killings begin to occur around Anthony. The protagonist will serve a role similar to that of Virginia Madsen’s character Helen Lyle, from the original 1992 movie.”
Moreover, Nia DaCosta (‘Little Woods,’ Top Boy’) serves as director. The screenplay is from Jordan Peele (‘Get Out,’ ‘Us’) and his MonkeyPaw producer Win Rosenfeld.
Additionally, some crew members include cinematographer John Guleserian (‘Friends from College,’ ‘Lovc, Simon’) and first-time production designer Cara Bower, who has served as art director on David Lynch’s ‘Twin Peaks: The Return’ and Jordan Peele’s ‘Us.’
Further, filming is currently underway in Chicago, Illinois, with a wrap date of September 20th.
Universal will release the film on June 12, 2020.
