Kevin Feige Says ‘Captain Marvel’ Will Pay Homage To 90’s Action Films Like ‘Terminator 2’

Mar 11, 2018

In an extensive interview with EntertainmentWeekly, Marvel’s Kevin Feige dished on a couple interesting tidbits concerning the upcoming solo debut of Captain Marvel.

While speaking about the new solo film he mentions that the action sequences will be greatly inspired by action films from the 1990s, fitting due to it’s 90s setting. He directly mentions James Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

“It also got us talking about different genres, exploring this notion of sort of the ‘90s action film. We hadn’t necessarily done anything like that before either, so there are definitely homages to our favorite ‘90s action films within Captain Marvel.”

“Well, not necessarily talking about any particulars of the story, but the action elements Terminator 2. That’s about as iconic as you get, looking at kind of those cool street level fights, street level car chases, and fun stuff like that. That being said, much of the movie takes place in outer space, as you might think a Captain Marvel movie would. Like all of our genre inspirations, there are bits and pieces here and there.”

I assume the spectacular sci-fi future war scenes mixed with somewhat grounded action sequences is what he could be referring to since Kevin said last summer it includes the Kree-Skrull War (Starforce too?) and reaffirms here that Captain Marvel is indeed a cosmic flick.

It’s not terribly surprising as you do get a sense of Cameron’s inspiration on stuff like Captain America: The Winter Soldier which felt like it lifted some visual cues from Terminator 2 and True Lies. Even the Nick Fury car chase scene felt like it was little more grounded action than we usually see in Marvel films.

I wouldn’t be shocked if there’s a little 80’s flare with Top Gun and Aliens homages too.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed for some MCU space marines.

Hopefully, Samuel L. Jackson get more badass sequences despite its cosmic elements. Feige also mentions how a young Nick Fury factors into the film as well.

“We wanted to explore a period before Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury had any idea about any of the other heroes and crazy stuff going on in the world. You know, we first met Nick when he told Tony, “You’re part of a big universe. You just don’t know yet.” Well, we want to go back to a time when he didn’t know it yet, and really showcase and announce that Carol Danvers was that first hero that Nick came across. That meant she could be the singular hero, but place it within timing of the MCU.”

Theres a really good chance we might see Peggy Carter and Everett Ross show up as well.

Filming will take place in Los Angeles and possibly in Lousiana as well.

Marvel has given the film the release date of March 8th, 2019.
