What was your first Cosplay experience?
My first experience with cosplay was at Edmonton Expo in 2012. It was actually right around Halloween, and I wanted a really awesome and new costume. So I decided to make an Assassin’s Creed costume! I wanted to do a fem Ezio Auditore, so I found an amazing website that had patterns and measurements which made it SO much easier.
I made it in a couple weeks and got this crazy urge to wear it right away. So I googled events in Edmonton and actually found out that Edmonton Expo was that weekend! So I attended my first convention then and there and since then I’ve been hooked!
How long have you been Cosplaying?
Define “cosplay” haha, because I’ve actually been making costumes my whole life. My first memory is in grade 6 when I showed up to school in a handmade robot costume. But cosplay is a term that’s usually paired with conventions, so I suppose I really started the whole cosplay and convention scene in 2012 when I attended Edmonton Expo.
Who or what inspired you to take up Cosplaying?
I think it’s a combination of my Dad and my brother. Both were huge influences when I was growing up. My dad loved Halloween and every year he decorated our house and we were always the scariest house on the block. I kind of picked up on that and get super excited about Halloween every year. My brother influenced me by introducing me to video games.
My earlier and best memories are when we used to play Super Mario on the original Nintendo. He would always be Mario and I would be Luigi. So because of that I’ve bloomed into a full-fledged gamer! You might notice that all of my costumes are based off of video games.
If you had to pick a favorite Cosplay you have worn, or have seen someone else wear, what would it be?
Oh man, this question always gets me. I’d have to say that Samus is probably my favorite cosplay. Not mine particularly because when I made her I had no idea what I was doing. But I saw a girl who did a 3D printed Samus and WOW. LIKE WOW. I want it so, SO bad.
If you had unlimited funds and resources, what Cosplay would you create?
DEATHWING FROM WORLD OF WARCRAFT. FULL BLOWN TO SCALE DEATHWING. I could sit inside it and operate it like a Gundam or something. COULD YOU IMAGINE?!
What advice would you offer to those who are aspiring Cosplayers?
Do your research and don’t give up! Everything I know I learned from the internet. The knowledge obtainable to our generation is endless.
Find that project that screams out to you and OWN IT! And don’t be afraid to ask if you don’t know. I welcome anyone to message me and ask away to their hearts content!
