Live-Action ‘Star Wars’ TV Series Not Happening Anytime Soon

Jan 25, 2016

You might remember back in 2005, George Lucas was developing a live-action series titled Star Wars: Underworld, which was being compared to the Godfather and Deadwood. For whatever reason, it’s risky material that could alienate the franchise’s demographic and the expensive behind a Star Wars project, it was never made. Those 50 scripts reportedly written by Battlestar Galactica‘s Ron Moore still exist and there was talk that another live-action series could be making it’s way to ABC or Netflix.

However, TV Line has word that while a TV series could happen eventually it won’t be coming in 2017 as the Netflix rumor suggested. Lucasfilm’s Kathy Kennedy seems still very open to eventually getting around to bringing Underworld back to the table, but it doesn’t look like it’s a priority. As network president Paul Lee tells the site the films are priority, and Rebels is their only focus currently for television.

There had been talk Star Wars: Underworld would focus on villainy of the Star Wars universe, such as pirates, smugglers, the Hutts, bounty hunters, and criminal syndicates. We’ve already seen Lucasfilm expand on this mythology in Force Awakens, and there is a strong expectation that Han Solo and Boba Fett movies will indeed explore the underworld a lot more than previous films. I wouldn’t be terribly shocked if Star Wars: Underworld like the Fett video game 1313 end up getting folded into the films.

We’ve seen with Marvel how entire projects like the Nick Fury solo movie, get folded into Captain America: The Winter Soldier to make the film stronger.
