‘MacGruber’ TV Show Has Been Pitched; The Lonely Island’s Fyre Fest-Like Satire Still in the Works

Feb 8, 2019

The Daily Beast was able to interview ‘SNL’ writer and member of The Lonely Island Jorma Taccone in Atlanta today. He was at SCAD’s 7th annual aTVfest for the TBS show ‘Miracle Workers.’

Taccone was then gave a reveal, that he has a pitched a ‘MacGruber’ television series:

“We just spent the last two days pitching it as a series, eight-to-ten episodes. I’m really hoping that when you print this there’s an announcement that it’s actually happening, because I know nothing right now. This is the first time I’ve mentioned it, so this may be a tragic interview.”

The ‘MacGruber’ feature film was based on the series of ‘Saturday Night Live’ sketches. The concept is a parody of ‘MacGyver,’ with titular character doing his best to use his skills (or lack thereof) to deactivate different weapons of mass destruction. And of course, he would do his wacky antics with his colorful cast of comrades.

Speaking of, the cast had Will Forte as the lead, with Kristen Wiig, Val Kilmer, Ryan Phillippe, and Maya Rudolph. Unfortunately, the 2010 film made only $9.3 million worldwide on a budget of $10 million budget. However, with the help of DVDs, the film is now regarded as a comedy cult classic.

So, when asked about the cast and who will return, Taccone had this to say:

“It’s everyone. Val was blown up pretty badly, he’ll have half a head. Everyone is so down. What’s nice is that, when you make something that had the heartbreak of not doing so well financially… I would feel terrible if the people involved were embarrassed about it, but Ryan loves that sh-t, Kristen loves that sh-t, all the people involved are so psyched.”

“We’ve had so many ideas over the years, from the moment we stopped filming. I just love this character so much. We can expand the world now.”

One of those ideas was a sequel to ‘MacGruber,’ which was in development. However, that was all the way back in 2016.

Here are the tweets that announced the screenplay for ‘MacGruber 2’ was being developed:

Hopefully the TV show talks go over well, cause it’s been almost 10 years, and the world needs more MacGruber.

Also, Taccone provided a quick update on the Lonely Island and Seth Rogen collaboration film based on a “music festival that goes HORRIBLY WRONG,” as said by Seth Rogen on Twitter:

And yes, they are aware it sounds a lot like the Fyre Festival fiasco:

Here’s what Taccone had to say about the project:

Oh yeah. I don’t want to divulge all the details but we’re figuring it out right now. You’ve seen the docs, right? It’s crazy. This is something that Akiva and Seth cooked up, and we’re figuring it all out right now.”

Good to hear the film is still in development, especially since the time is ripe to make the film, amid the releases of the Netflix and Hulu documentaries about the Fyre Festival. More details will likely come soon, on both this and the ‘MacGruber’ television series.
