The long-gestating ‘Batman’ solo film now has Paul Dano onboard to play The Riddler, who will be known as Edward Nashton in this film. Jonah Hill (‘The Lego Batman Movie,’ ‘Maniac’) was originally in talks for the role, after deciding not to play The Penguin, but the studio and the actor could not reach a deal.
Dano recently got an Emmy nomination for his supporting role in Showtime’s ‘Escape at Dannemora.’ He also received a Golden Globe nomination for his performance in Bill Pohlad’s ‘Love & Mercy.’ Other credits include Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘There Will Be Blood,’ Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Prisoners,’ and Steve McQueen’s ’12 Years a Slave.’
Moreover, Robert Pattinson (‘Good Time,’ ‘High Life’) will take on this latest iteration of the Dark Knight. He replaces Ben Affleck (‘Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice,’ ‘Justice League’). Jeffrey Wright (‘Westworld,’ ‘The Laundromat’) will play Commissioner Gordon. Zoë Kravitz (‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,’ ‘Big Little Lies’) portrays Catwoman.
Matt Reeves, the helmer of the ‘Dawn’ and ‘War’ installments in ‘Planet of the Apes’ franchise, serves as both director and co-writer, with scribe Mattson Tomlin penning the screenplay with him. Tomlin wrote the upcoming Netflix film ‘Power,’ from directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman.
Additionally, the film will feature a rogues gallery of villains. Characters that will be featured alongside The Riddler and Catwoman include The Penguin, Firefly, Two-Face, and Mad Hatter. According to Borys Kit of The Hollywood Reporter, there were some initial talks for Seth Rogen (‘Long Shot,’ ‘The Lion King’) to play Penguin, but this endeavor fell through as well.
The crew, so far, comprises of:
- Art directors Oliver Benson (‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle,’ ‘Black Earth Rising,’) and Joe Howard (‘Overlord,’ ‘Spider-Man: Far from Home’)
- Cinematographer Greig Fraser (‘‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,’ ‘Vice’)
- Costume designer Jacqueline Durran (‘Beauty and the Beast,’ ‘Darkest Hour’)
- Production designer James Chinlund (‘War for the Planet of the Apes,’ ‘The Lion King’)
- Visual effects supervisor Dan Lemmon (‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,’ ‘The Jungle Book’)
Also, costume designers David Crossman and Glyn Dillon (‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,’ ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’) will be tackling the batsuit.
Further, filming is aiming to begin January 13, 2020 in London, England.
Warner Bros. will release ‘The Batman’ on June 25, 2021.
