Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae have teamed to star in ‘The Lovebirds,’ a romantic comedy just picked up by Paramount.

Michael Showalter directed Nanjiani in the surprise hit ‘The Big Sick.’ Now, he is reteaming with the actor once again to direct. Nanjiani, Rae and Showalter are serving as executive producers.

The screenplay is by Aaron Abrams and Brendan Gall, as well as ‘Blindspot’ creator Martin Gero. The film centers on a couple (Nanjiani and Rae) on the brink of a breakup. Then, the pair subsequently become embroiled in a bizarre and hijinks-filled murder mystery. Further, as they get close to clearing their names and solving the case, the twosome need to figure out how they, and their relationship, can survive the night.

Nanjiani (‘Silicon Valley’) broke out with the Oscar-nominated ‘The Big Sick.’ Nanjiani has two films coming up this year. Those two are  Sony’s ‘Men in Black: International,’ releasing June 14, and Fox’s ‘Stuber,’ releasing July 12.

Rae is the co-creator, writer, executive producer, and actress of HBO’s ‘Insecure.’ Moreover, she was recently seen in the drama ‘The Hate U Give.’ Her next film is Universal’s ‘Little,’ releasing April 12.

The fast-tracked project will begin production on January 21 in New Orleans.
