If you grew up in the 90s chances are you were a Mighty Morphin Power Rangers fan and if you were/are, chances are you’ve been holding out hope for a new Power Rangers film to grace theaters once again. Well it was reported late last year that we in fact would be getting a feature film in 2016!
Once the new film was announced there wasn’t much in terms of notable news or anything to report on, other than the fact that Robert Orci would be stepping down as producer on the film to focus on Star Trek 3 which would be his directorial debut.
For a while it seemed that all hope was lost for us Power Ranger faithful to get a new film of our beloved series! But one person has remained adamant that the film was actually in the works and would be happening. That person is none other than the original green power ranger; Jason David Frank! When things started to quiet down regarding the film JDF took to social media to assure the Power Rangers faithful that it would be happening and that he was confident that he would have a role in the film in some aspect.
When JDF was asked during an interview with Comicbook.com about the film he had this to say
“We’re definitely not in a holding pattern. The movie is definitely set for this year. Everything is in place. They won’t give me specific details because it’s all like hush-hush. Even me, I try. I email Saban and ask them kind of what you’re asking me, but they do feel that I’m going to be part of it, because they feel there’s no movie, at least, without me. The funny thing is, one way or another, whether it happens or it doesn’t, I’ve been great to Lionsgate and I’ve been loyal to Saban. It’s not like they owe me, but if I want to ask for a personal favor, I’ve invested into their emotional bank account. I feel like it’s fair to have that withdrawal with them, because I’ve done nothing but support them for the last 10 years, 20 years in fact. So when that happens, I don’t need to cash in any favors. I believe it’s going to happen anyway, but when it does, I’ll keep my fans involved, but I will tell you it is being filmed this year. I know that for a fact. It’s going to be great when it is”.
There’s no denying that Jason David Frank is arguably the most popular Power Ranger of all time. Having appeared in multiple iterations of Power Rangers throughout the years to his seemingly never ending convention appearances, he’s a force to be reckoned with in the Power Rangers Universe. There’s no denying that if he didn’t have a part in the new film it wouldn’t feel like Power Rangers. What are your thoughts on JDF’s statement? Are there any other rangers you want to see have a role in the film? Who would you cast in the film? Let us know in the comments below!
