Neill Blomkamp Wants To Make A Low-Budget ‘Kruger’ Spinoff

Jul 11, 2016

Elysium might not have been many people’s cup-of-tea, but Sharlto Copley‘s villainous mercenary/assassin Kruger was a delightful nasty highlight of the science fiction action film, as messy as it ended-up.

Writer-director Neill Blomkamp doesn’t seem to be done with the character, teasing to Empire Podcast last year that he’s talked with the original financiers of Elysium about developing a non-linear movie focused on Sharlto’s Kruger.

I did ask [Media Rights Capital?] who paid for Elysium, I was like “what if you did a lower budget of this where Kruger is the lead character and is absolutely non-arc, don’t expect the character to to arc, he just doesn’t, he just does a bunch of shit that’s awesome” and he was like “that does sound like that could be cool”.

I’d be totally down for a nutty action film with Kruger and his mercenary buddies doing globetrotting missions and blowing stuff up. The bigger question, will Media Rights Capital actually pay for it?

At this point, Blomkamp has two other film projects gestating currently with both Fox’s Alien 5 on the horizon along with the adaptation of novel The Gone World.

He’s also co-producing Ruairi Robinson’s Leviathan alongside fellow producer Simon Kinberg (X-Men, Deadpool, Rogue One, Elysium, Chappie).

Would you be interested in another crazy sci-fi action film featuring this bonkers villain?
