UPDATE: Early VFX Tests Are For ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Fan-Film

Aug 28, 2019

UPDATE: We have been contacted directly by the production company related to the two scenes featured in the Reddit post. They have informed us while it was a shoot for Avatar: The Last Airbender it was strictly only for a fan-film to feature new filming technology and is not related to the Netflix production.

About one year ago Netflix announced that a live-action retelling of the popular Nick animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender will be coming to the streaming network. The announcement also revealed that the original show creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko will also be returning as writers and showrunners. Not much has been known on the show in this past year besides the two were hard at work writing the scripts. They mentioned an open casting call will also go out for the main characters Aang, Sokka Katara, and Zuko. However, that has yet taken place but expected to begin soon.

Now Reddit user bonanzarama has revealed that early VFX tests have gone out on the series. The user stresses that Netflix is currently only shopping around to different VFX companies to see who will be hired for the show. The two scenes shot on an LA backlot included Firelord Ozai in his throne room. With the next scene including Sokka and Katara in the South Pole. He reveals that Netflix is looking to make the show its ‘Game of Thrones’ with filming to be shot on location in Vancouver and Hawaii.  He lastly reveals that actors stood in for the roles of Sokka and Katara specifically for the tests and do not reflect the shows more ethnic approach. Nor does the scripts used expected to be used in the actual series. However, James Lew (Luke Cage, G.I.Joe: Retaliation) was a stand-in for Firelord Ozai and was considering auditioning for the role.
