In 2014, director Bong Joon-ho gave audiences the science fiction thriller Snowpiercer. While it was only modestly successful here (based on bad distribution deals), it nevertheless went onto success in South Korea as well as cult status in the US. This year, Bong Joon-ho is introducing audiences to a new film that will feature on Netflix: Okja.
This trailer is one of the most brilliantly surreal things that I have seen in years. The cast looks amazing and the blend of social commentary, action and comedy made me smile. It follows a creature that is captured by a large multi-national corporation. The creatures best friend is a little girl (Seo-Hyun Ahn) who will risk everything to get her friend back. The cast includes Tilda Swinton as the head of the corporation and Paul Dano as the leader of an animal rights group trying to save the creature.
Okja also stars Steven Yuen (The Walking Dead), Lily Collins (The Last Tycoon), Giancarlo Esposito (Better Call Saul) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Life). It will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 19, 2017 before going to the streaming service June 28, 2017.
