OpenAI Enrolls ChatGPT at Arizona State University
OpenAI has partnered with Arizona State University (ASU) to integrate ChatGPT into ASU’s educational and research operations. ASU is the first higher education institution to collaborate with OpenAI, as many others have restrictions or prohibitions on using generative AI assistants for academic projects.
ASU will receive ChatGPT Enterprise accounts from OpenAI, which will be distributed to the university community. These accounts offer enhanced controls and tools, including shareable templates, unlimited data analysis, and priority access to computing resources for ChatGPT. ASU students will have the opportunity to use ChatGPT for studying and editing their writing. In February, ASU will gather ideas from students and faculty on how to best utilize ChatGPT for educational, research, and administrative projects.
The partnership between ASU and OpenAI emphasizes privacy and security measures. OpenAI will not use the data collected by ChatGPT at ASU to train its models, and all submitted prompts will remain private. This collaboration reflects the changing attitudes towards generative AI in education, which OpenAI aims to promote. Other companies, such as Grammarly, also offer generative AI-powered features for assisting students in writing tasks.
OpenAI is actively seeking to establish a presence in universities and has published a guide for educators interested in using ChatGPT. OpenAI believes that generative AI can enhance critical thinking skills, language learning, debate practice, and test preparation. The company looks forward to learning from ASU and expanding the impact of ChatGPT in higher education.
