For many gamers, the chance to switch off from the real world and become fully immersed in something else is one of the most important aspects of the hobby. Well, we think there’s nothing like stepping back in time to let yourself properly escape.

All of these games focus on a certain time period in history. Some follow the quick-play format, allowing you to dip in and out during your day. Others are more of an in-depth storyline, guiding you through fascinating historical periods. Whichever kind of gamer you are, we’re pretty confident we’ve got a historical video game that you’ll enjoy.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance

First up is a brilliant game from Warhorse Studios and Deep Silver. The game is set in the medieval land of Bohemia (that you’ll now be most familiar with as Czechia). You take the role of a blacksmith’s son, whose life is torn from him by raiders. Seeking vengeance on the raiders, you set out on a quest to find them.

You’ll need to navigate the sometimes brutal medieval landscape, escaping your enemies, whilst keeping yourself healthy, free from hunger, and with a place to sleep each night. The focus on realism is one of the major plus points of this game, allowing you to explore the world in your own time, taking quests as and when you choose. The gameplay is certainly challenging, so if you’re after a relaxing experience, this game isn’t the best choice. However, if you want to feel fully immersed in Bohemia, with all of its challenges, you’re in for a medieval treat.

Book of Horus

If Kingdom Come: Deliverance sounds a little too involved for you, then our next choice might be more up your street. Book of Horus is a slot game, developed by ReelRNG. It takes its inspiration from Ancient Egyptian mythology, in particular the god of the sky, Horus. On the reels, you’ll find various symbols from the time period, including hieroglyphs, pyramids, and plenty of gods. Look out for the God of Horus with the falcon’s head, as he can unlock some powerful features.

If you’re interested in playing Book of Horus then this guide on how to obtain 100 free spins for this game with the Bet365 bonus code is something to look into. You can use these spins to get to grips with the game, before deciding whether you’d like to wager your own money.

Gerda

Gerda is a game that we like so much we’ve already written a whole review of it. For a brief synopsis, Gerda is a historical RPG game, set during WWII. You take the role of Gerda, a half-Dutch, half-German girl, who has to make some tough decisions in order to survive.

The gameplay itself isn’t challenging, you don’t need to be lightning-fast on the buttons to get ahead. However, you will soon realise how important critical thinking skills are in a game like this one. There are no easy options in this game, but for those with an interest in this time period, it proves a fascinating play-through.

Civilization VI

Turn-based strategy games were more or less created with the dawn of the original Civilization game. We’re now on our sixth iteration and it would be fair to say it’s better than ever. You begin with a settler and a warrior, on a map that you know nothing about. It’s up to you to make your starting city and grow your own civilization until it can defeat all others. You can do this via six different routes, each with their own benefits and drawbacks.

In order to survive and thrive, your civilization will need natural resources, a strong army, plenty of research, and an eye for diplomacy. Plus, a sprinkling of luck never hurts! If you’re into deeply strategic gaming, then this game is a must.
