For ages, we’ve seen countless bloody wars destroying lives and changing the world as we know it, but all along there has been a secret war going on right under our noses. Possums have always been those huge rats that we hit with our cars or play dead if we get too close to them. Penguins have always been everyone’s favorite aquatic bird, because they’re so darn cute and fluffy, we even buy our children stuffed penguin dolls to play with. What we didn’t know, is that possums and penguins are mortal enemies, who have been engaged in an end-less bloody war for a millennia, and it’s still going on today!

Fanboy Comics has brought this war to light in Penguins vs. Possums vol 1, and if you’re a diehard penguin or possum fan, who would absolutely hate to see a penguin or possum mowed down with a machine gun, tread lightly because this book holds nothing back. Penguins have secret kingdoms and armories within their aquarium exhibitions that hold all sorts of plated armor, rocket launchers, uzi machine guns, and much more. The Possums live in a large cave system, filling their armories with spears, knives, and various other weapons as well, so when these two forces clash it’s a real bloodbath.

Sebastian Kadlecik, John Bring and Lindsay Calhoon Bring have come up with an incredibly deep story, set in this secret world of interspecies war, and they really want us to feel for their characters. Coming into this book, I was ready to take a side. Look, I’ve ran over a possum before, I’m not proud of it and it wasn’t a pleasant experience, but I’ve always seen possums as pretty gross animals. Like most humans I’ve always loved penguins, so I can’t help but say I came in a little biased. Now that I’ve finished reading volume one, I can’t help but feel torn into little pieces about which team is on the side of good here.

There is a deep hatred

The story in Penguins vs Possums vol 1 is almost reminiscent of Game of Thrones, with the way they develop their main characters and story. At first you like a character then they do something that makes you realize they aren’t the good guy you thought they were. With other characters whom you aren’t sure if you should like or not, come out as the symbol for good. They filled the story with prophecies, scandal, treachery and hope for peace, and it is a catching read.

The artwork in this book is some pretty fantastic black and white penciling. The art stays consistently good through all four chapters in this first volume, and I always love when the art is consistent from chapter to chapter. The book is very graphic at times, so even though this may sound like something to pick up for your younger kids, I would advise against it. There is quite a bit of violence depicted, but that being said, it’s still tasteful enough for an older audience. They also do a great job drawing a large array of different looking characters. In real life, when we see a group of emperor penguins, you can’t really tell the difference between many of them, but Fanboy Comic’s artists give a distinct look and uniqueness to many of their characters.

The book has some hilarious moments of pop-culture references ranging from Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones, to funny scenes involving us humans. A human will notice a penguin with bullet holes in it or a possum wearing glasses, and when they say something to the others they’re with, they get called silly and are told they’re just seeing things. Will the humans ever catch on and notice there is a secret world of war going on?

This book has a little bit of everything for everyone, including romance, actions, drama and comedy. Each chapter has twists and turns that end with jaw clinching cliffhangers. So when you read this, you’re going to want enough time to read it in one sitting! I’ll definitely be checking out more books from Fanboy Comics if Penguins vs. Possums vol 1 is anything to go by. I really enjoyed this book.
