‘Power Rangers’ Box Office Returns Puts Major Doubts On Sequel

May 13, 2017

Lionsgate had big plans for their big screen Power Rangers reboot. The studio had hoped their re-imagining of the classic 90’s TV series would be successful enough to spawn six sequels.

The film starred Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Ludi Lin and Becky G as our new group of Rangers. With Bryan Cranston as Zordon and Elizabeth Banks as Rita.

Power Rangers got mixed receptions from critics, but most agreed it was fun and heaped praise on the film’s young cast, especially RJ Cyler who played Billy Cranston the Blue Ranger.

But as things stands the Power Rangers will be lucky to be Morphin again anytime soon. The films worldwide box office sits at $135 million worldwide since its release in March.

Lionsgate had hoped it’s release in China this week would be it’s saving grace. But the film only managed to pull in $1.2 million on Thursday night and isn’t tracking very well this weekend.

The studio haven’t officially announced the sequel as dead, but with the films budget being $100 million and it’s returns nowhere near what they would have wanted, it would be surprising if Lionsgate put anymore money into the franchise.

Stranger things have happened though so fingers crossed. Maybe DVD and Blue-ray sales would help us get a sequel. It would be a real shame if we never got to see what they had planned with the greatest Ranger ever Tommy Oliver who was teased during a mid-credit scene.
