It’s that time of year when Quentin Tarantino has released a film, and it’s getting a bunch of awards consideration. This means he’s out and about, giving multiple interviews and certain details are slipping about potential next projects. One of them that’s been mostly talked about recently is his crime flick set in the 1930’s, focused on bank robbers. Tarantino mentioning that it would take inspiration from Pretty Boy Floyd, Dillinger, along with Bonnie and Clyde.
In a new interview with Quentin, he actually goes into more detail revealing he’d like the film to be set in Australia, invoking Bonnie and Clyde yet again.
“I do have an idea for an Australian film that would take place in the ’30s. It would be a ‘Bonnie and Clyde’-ish sort of story set with a couple of outlaws in Australia. We’ll see whatever happens.”
Usually, it’s the project he’s most vocal about that get’s made next. We saw this previously when he was mulling over a slavery-focused western during the release of Inglourious Basterds, and a more traditional western during the press rounds for Django Unchained leading to the Hateful Eight.
If there was ever an excuse for Aussie actress Margot Robbie (Wolf of Wall Street, Suicide Squad, Focus, Big Short) to work with Quentin this would be it. I just don’t see an American actress pulling off an Aussie accent, or Tarantino hiring actors from other countries to play Aussies. He’s known for making sure actors for the most part keep their own accents, leading me to believe the cast will include a bunch of Aussies if it does happen next. Although, the country did include a bunch of immigrants coming from Ireland, Scotland, and England around that time.
“Pretty Boy” Chris Hemsworth, might also make for an interesting lead as well after Tarantino hiring the likes of Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio and Channing Tatum for key roles. Hemsworth could really use the help to shake-off the Thor persona, since movies like Rush, Blackhat, and In The Heart of The Sea didn’t manage to do that.
You could also picture him casting a plethora of Aussie talent including Cate Blanchett, Jason Clarke, Guy Pearce, Russell Crowe, Ben Mendelsohn, Joel Edgerton, Sullivan Stapleton, Mel Gibson, Jackie Weaver, and even comedian Rebel Wilson.
John Hillcoat’s The Proposition is one of the better Aussie crime flicks, and just happens to be a western. I’d like to think it would have a major influence on this potential project. Australia’s film and television industry is filled with many amazing crime epics.
Should Tarantino make this his priority and who would you cast in the film?
