Recap of RTX 2016: Where Gaming Meets The Internet

Jul 6, 2016

It’s been one hell-of-a-year for the folks over at Rooster Teeth. RWBY has wrapped up its 3rd volume, Lazer Team, which shattered Indiegogo records, hit theaters, and their new drama series Day 5 debuted. This year’s 6th annual RTX convention, hosted by the Rooster Teeth welcomed nearly 60,000 fans from all over the world were in attendance.

Check out some of our detailed highlights from the convention:

Million Dollars, But… has slowly become one of my favorite shows of RT’s. The panel for the show was hosted by Burnie Burns, Blaine Gibson, Barbara Dunkleman and Gavin Free. They all discuss what it’s like filming the show and some of the hysterical ideas that didn’t quite make it into the show. Fans can get their hand on the party card-game iteration that basically asks what absurd things would you do for a million dollars. The card game was originally crowdfunded back in May and raised over $1 million, ironically enough. The game went on sale last month but I was finally able to pick up the game for myself at the Rooster Teeth store set up during the convention. I would highly suggest picking it up.

One of the showdowns and highlights of the weekend, was between Kinda Funny and Screw Attack. The event took place on the main stage and played out like one big WWF (Right, I didnt say WWE) spectacle. After all the trash talking and took place, the two teams faced off in five games: Crash Team Racing, Gone Home, Wii Sports Tennis, WWE All Stars, and Gang Beasts. ScrewAttack came out victorious.

Barbara Dunkelman, the Program Director of RTX, and Jack of all trades at Rooster Teeth, gathered a group of Yang’s together for an epic photo op. For those unaware, Barb is the voice of Yang on RWBY.

The cosplayers were fantastic. Characters from RWBY, Red Vs Blue were well represented. One of the funnier/evil cosplays game from an “arm dealer”, who was walking around with (SPOILERS) Yang’s arm and a sign that said “Looking for Ash”, referring to  Pyrrha’s death. Too soon, bro. Too soon.

RTX is different from most conventions. To me, it’s like one big party celebrating some of the best internet content like Achievement Hunter, RT Podcast, RWBY, Red Vs Blue, etc… When you attend a convention like RTX, it’s like seeing old friends that you haven’t seen in a while. This is definitely a convention for the fans. My only regret was not being able to catch every panel.

Dates for RTX 2017 were already being advertised at the event. The 2017 convention will be held on July 7th to 9th.

The folks at Rooster Teeth released a lovely video highlighting the three-day event.
