Review: Lenovo Legion 7i – Close to Perfection

Sep 16, 2020

Unique design that puts gamers first.

Summary

Legion 7i 15″ is Lenovo’s best laptop to-date. With a 10th Gen Intel Core i7, 32GB of RAM, and a powerful NVIDIA RTX 2070 Max-Q GPU – it is the best value for PC gamers.

Pros

  • Unique design
  • Best-in-class keyboard
  • Solid performance
  • Excellent speakers

Cons

  • Filmy display

Lenovo’s Legion 7i is an excellent gaming laptop. It’s gorgeous all around, with a best-in-class keyboard, chassis, and lighting. It is easy to recommend for most people who are experiencing any of the following use cases:

  • Require productivity and gaming in one device
  • Does not want a desktop (perhaps due to living space, simplicity, lifestyle, or personal preference)
  • Participates in gaming “on-the-go”
  • Seeking a strong value and does not have a small budget

Those who fall into two or more of the above use-cases should strongly consider the Legion 7i as their next machine.

Specs (approx. $2,000)

  • Intel Core i7-10750H
  • 32 GB RAM
  • GeForce 2070 Max-Q
  • 1080p | 240Hz
  • 1TB SSD

Performance

Impressive performance for the price!

Productivity

The 7i handled everything I threw at it: Microsoft Office suite, multiple Edge tabs, and conference calls.

Gaming

I started with the new Marvel’s Avengers. I experienced 75-85 FPS at 1080p with settings on a mix of ultra and medium (leveraging NVIDIA’s GeForce Experience for recommended settings).

Design

Excellent design starts with the target user in mind. It feels to me that Lenovo’s engineers must be gamers. The 7i is the most refined iteration of Lenovo’s gaming laptops. The chassis is firm and the lighting is fun. But more improtantly, the overall struture is very refined and oriented at gamers.

Starting with the back, the majority of the ports are there, such as power, HDMI out, and ethernet, sandwiched between two exchaust vents with customizable lighting. On the sides you have additional USB ports and a headphone jack. Along the entire base is a customizable lighting bar, as well aggressive exhaust vents. When you open the lid, you’re greated by a subtle lip with “LEGION” engraved on it. Lenovo knows gamers appreciate a one-handed open. This is them winking at you.

The top of the keyboard deck has a pepperjack design that breaks up the otherwise clean deck. Like previous Legion laptops, the 7i has bottom-firing speakers.

Who is it for?

The Legion 7i is my new go-to recommendation for folks looking for an excellent business and gaming laptop. It’s heavier than an ultrabook, but has better performance and a larger display. Battery life cannot compare to an ultarbook, but you get a powerful, discrete GPU that will keep you gaming for years to come.
