After his recent venture into the world of manga adaptations with Alita: Battle Angel earlier this year, director Robert Rodriguez is now set to work with the Netflix streaming service on a new kids superhero film titled We Can Be Heroes. Deadline first broke the news last week that the Spy Kids director’s latest endeavor would star Bollywood star Pryanka Chopra. Another report from Deadline added that Chopra will be joined by Game of Thrones alum Pedro Pascal, Captain Marvel star Akira Akbar, The Fast & The Furious‘ Sung Kang, The Purge‘s YaYa Gosselin and Christian Slater. Other actors such as Boyd Holbrook, Andrew Diaz, Andy Walken, Hala Finley, Isaiah Russell-Bailey, Lotus Blossom, Lyon Daniels, Nathan Blair, Vivien Lyra Blair, Adriana Barraza and Christopher McDonald will also feature in the film.
Deadline also provided the following synopsis for We Can Be Heroes.
“The pic follows the children of Earth’s superheroes after their parents have been kidnapped by alien invaders. The children must team up and learn to work together if they want to save their parents and the world.”
Needless to say, it sounds like We Can Be Heroes will act as more of a throwback to Rodriguez’s Spy Kids franchise- just with superheroes this time, rather than super spies. Considering it’s been the better part of a decade since Rodriguez last helmed a family film, hopefully We Can Be Heroes will turn out to be an exciting return to the genre for the director. As is usually the case with Netflix films, little else is currently known about We Can Be Heroes, save that the film is now in production in Texas.
